How to make it to CEO of your firm?
Everybody wants to have a successful career and move up the ladder at work. The ultimate in career success is becoming the CEO of the company. Obviously this is a pretty rare achievement as there are not that many CEO jobs. However if you know what it takes to get to that level there is every reason to believe that you will be successful.
The first thing that you have to understand is that there is no clear path to becoming the CEO; there are many routes that you can follow. In some cases you can work for one company for years and get promoted over time to the top job. In other cases you will need to change jobs several times and move up the ladder with each new job until somebody offers you the job of being CEO. While there are several different paths to becoming CEO there are some skills that will make getting the job far more likely.
The first thing that you are going to have to do if you are going to become a CEO is to get the right education. The education you get at the undergrad level won't be all that relevant and should be geared towards the initial job that you want to get with the company. That being said it is best to avoid getting a business degree; oddly they do a poor job of training people for a career in business. You will however have to get an MBA; virtually all senior executives have one. Really an MBA is not good enough you are going to have to get one from one of the top schools if you are going to have any real chance of becoming CEO.
Another thing that you are going to have to do if you want to be CEO is to develop your leadership skills. The most important thing that a CEO can have is being a good leader; they are after all responsible for leading the company. Not only do you have to become a good leader but you have to make sure that your bosses know you are good leader. Take every opportunity that you have to fill a leadership position at work.
The other big skill that you are going to have to develop if you are going to be the CEO is communication. As CEO you are going to be communicating with lots of people so you had better be good at it. That means both written and oral communication, you need to be good at both writing a business proposal and getting up and making a speech. Communication skills will help you in almost any jobs so this is something that you should be working on right from the beginning of your career.
